Once students are on the Online Resource Center page for their grade, they simply need to click on the name of the lesson to access the handout, projects template, sample, and links to the recommended websites. There are more technology integration lessons and projects available for each 2nd grade than students will be able to complete in a school year.

2nd Grade Technology Overview

A is for ant full size imageSecond grade students master the use of the mouse and begin to learn proper keyboarding using the beginning lessons in www.typing.com. Second grade students are introduced to our K-8 google lesson plans with Google Slides using some template-style projects. Using project templates with younger students makes it simple to keep all the students together and it allows the faster students to easily work ahead. The most challenging part of using K-8 google lesson plans with young students is the login process. If you use Google Apps with younger students you should simplify the login process. Second grade students learn to search for and insert images from within Google Slides. Next they learn to type words and phrases in Google Slides text boxes. It is absolutely critical to teach students to use the “undo arrow” as they will most certainly make some mistakes. A common mistake in Google Slides happens when students try to erase text but instead erase a text box. Help students remember the location of the undo arrow by reminding them that it is right next to the printer icon on the toolbar. Students learn to insert and format text in Google Docs with assignments that require them to type autobiographical and descriptive sentences. Students also learn to format the text and change the alignment. Second grade students learn to search for pictures from within Google Docs and Google Slides. Students are introduced to Google Sheets as they learn to make some simple charts and graphs. Along with searching from within Google Slides and Google Docs students learn some simple internet searching concepts using Kids Search.

Hour of code logoSecond grade students use specific math, language arts, social studies, science and STEM games during curriculum skills enrichment time. They will also learn simple programming and practice their coding skills during the Hour of Code which is a worldwide event held during the first week of December each year. In addition to the Hour of Code students learn a progression of coding and programming skills by accessing tutorials from our STEM Page. The STEM page provides links to programming tutorials for Beginners up to Advanced Level. There are also direct links to Scratch.

2nd Grade Sample Lesson Overview

Preparation:

  1. Provide all your students easy access to the Online Resource Center
    • Place a shortcut on the desktops; change the icon to a yellow star
    • Add an assignment or question on Google Classroom with a link to this page
  2. Clearly post your expectations for behavior

Lesson Overview:

  1. Post the Lesson Plan Objectives: 1) Keyboarding, 2) Google Slides & 3) STEM Page or Curriculum Enrichment
  2. Ask students to open the "Online Resource Center"
    • Some students have challenges with a “double click”. A method that always works with younger students is
      • Point and click on the yellow star (or other icon)
      • Press the Enter Key (which should be marked with a star)
  3. Ask students to click on “Typing.com” (be sure to set up accounts for students in 2nd grade)
    • Review Proper Keyboarding Positions
    • Guide students in entering the J, F & Space section
    • Continue for 10 minutes or until a student has completed the section
  4. Ask students to open “Animal ABC Book”
    • Guide students in making a copy of the “view only” file.
      • This is the most difficult part of this lesson. Be sure to demonstrate erasing the “Copy of..,’ and replacing with their first name only. Students can expand the name of the project to firstname-Pics next class
    • Review the expectations on Slide 1
    • Ask students to go to Slide 2 (by clicking on the small slide to the left)
      • Erase the bug, then demonstrate the process for inserting and resizing an image
      • Demonstrate erasing the text
    • Ask students to go to Slide 3
      • Tell students they will be adding the names and school names next class (this can get a little tricky)
    • Ask students to go to Slide 4 (Dog slide)
      • Complete this slide as a class
    • Encourage students to work ahead, add 2-3 images on each slide, add 2-3 bullets on each slide
  5. Students that finish early may visit the “STEM PAGE” or "Curriculum Enrichment"

We provide lesson plan overviews and detailed lesson plans for the entire year.
